The exhibition 'WroConcret. Wrocław’s Visual Text 1967+’ is an insight into unique artistic phenomenons – conceptual art and concrete poetry – which beginning and intense development took place in Wrocław at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. In this particularly marked by the history and culturally diverse city emerges the artistic ferment in the form of a full bloom of a new idea an artistic freedom. The writers turn to a new dimension of language – the visual. At the same time the artists reject representation and figuration in favor of a communication through word. This shift of tools, resulting from a protest against the devaluation of language by the regime and the complaisance of art for the authorities of those days, induces an original entanglement of the most interesting artistic movements of post-war Poland – conceptual art and visual poetry. As a consequence, the voice of Polish art emerges from behind the Iron Curtain, visible and quite important for international artistic community. Another reason for this lies the fact that the new movements are not local phenomena, but are inscribed in the best traditions of international art, at the same time preserving the quality that puts them in the Polish context.
’WroConcret’ is the first complex exhibition in Poland to embrace the visual text genre initiated in Wrocław, influenced the shape of Polish art in general. Featured works are not only the original realizations, loaned for the duration of the exhibition from a number of museums, galleries and archives in Poland, but first and foremost the sketches and notes from private archives of the artists. The audience has a unique opportunity to learn about the process of creation of now classical pieces from the 1960s, to the most recent works by young authors of visual poetry and art.
