A Piece of Poetry. Conversation with Stanisław Dróżdż is a series of conversations carried in November and December 2006 with an outstanding Polish artist working between poetry and visual arts. In the extended interview, Stanisław Dróżdż speaks about his childhood and youth, his family and home, his struggle with illness, his weaknesses and doubts. He recalls the beginnings of concrete poetry, which he initiated in Wrocław, and discusses its most important issues. He lifts the veil off the secrets of his creative process, speaks about his methods of work, remembers his mentors, friends and fellow artists. The interview is richly illustrated with photographs from his private archives, reproductions of his sketches, typescripts, press clipping and documentation of exhibitions.
Stanisław Dróżdż [1939-2009] was a concrete poet, one of the most outstanding artists of the Polish avant-garde of the 60’s and 70’s of the 20th century. Since 1967 he created works stretching between literature and visual arts that he described as “concept-shapes,” in which he combined linguistic signs with symbols used in other disciplines, e.g. mathematics. His most important works, counted among the world classics of the genre, include Zapominanie (Forgetting), było-jest-będzie (was-is-will be), Samotność (Loneliness; 1967) andmiędzy (in-between; 1977). He represented Poland in the most important exhibitions of conceptual art and concrete poetry, such as ?sound text – concrete poety – visual texts in Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1970-1972), the 50th Biennale di Venezia (2003), andBeyond Geometry, Experiments in Form, 1940s-1970s in Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2004). He was also active in animating the concrete poetry movement in Poland. He organized five academic and theoretical sessions on concrete poetry. He supported and presented work of many other artists, and promoted the knowledge of the artistic phenomenon he co-created.
